Dad Defends Son With Down Syndrome In Emotional Video

A Canadian father is receiving support around the world after posting a video of himself defending children with Down syndrome. Robb Scott filmed the video after he overheard another father in a video store explaining to his son what Down syndrome was. The boy was selecting a film to watch and picked up one that features a character with Down syndrome. He asked his father what Down syndrome is, which caught Robb’s attention. That’s because Robb’s own son, Turner, has Down syndrome.

Robb could tell the other father was caught off-guard by his son’s question and trying to find the right words. “It’s an illness of people not knowing anything,” Robb heard the father tell his son. At that moment, Robb wanted to correct the father and explain what he knew to be true about Down syndrome, but he chose to remain silent.

After Robb left the store, he was overcome with the feeling that he had failed his son, Turner. Devastated and full of regret, he chose to record this video as a way to correct his mistake.

“The video was really more for me because I felt like ‘OK, I dealt with this poorly and the only way I could feel better is to at least express positively what I feel,'” Scott told ABC News today. “[I thought] maybe a couple of people will see it and share it and it will help them think differently.”

His emotional video has since gone viral, not only for the heartfelt sentiment he expresses, but also for the lesson it teaches.
