Artist Cuts And Glues Paper Into Incredible Sculptures That Leap Off The Page

Calvin Nicholls has been working with paper for over 25 years, painstakingly cutting and texturing paper into beautiful paper sculptures unlike anything I’ve ever seen before! The Canadian artist’s favorite subjects are animals. From birds to dogs and monkeys to bears, Calvin methodically researches their anatomical shapes before creating his three-dimensional art pieces that literally leap out of their frames! He uses X-Acto knives, scalpels and archive paper to create the lifelike textures and shapes. In Japan, paper art such as Calvin’s is called ‘kirigami’ a variation on origami that also involves cutting of the paper. Take a look at some of his fantastic paper sculptures in the pictures below!

This beautiful piece was auctioned off for charity.

It’s surprising how large the art is!

The way he cuts the paper makes the feathers and fur look real!

A small (9×12) but fun piece commissioned by a client is just finished and ready for framing. Haven't done colour accents recently apart from this one but rather enjoyed it.
