Badger is Derik Hodgson’s best friend and his hero! Derik found the loyal 11-year-old Lab-Rottweiler mix, abandoned in the woods as a puppy. Since that fateful day the two have been inseparable and enjoyed many experiences in the wilderness near Derik’s remote cabin in Elgin, Ontario.
However, one experience would have ended in tragedy for the 71-year-old if it had not been for his faithful friend.
It was the middle of winter and Derik went out to photograph some eagles when he slipped on an icy lake and broke his leg. He was on his back on the ice with temperatures below freezing and a shattered leg. He was barely conscious and starting to suffer from hypothermia when Badger appeared.
He remembers grabbing Badger’s collar and commanding him to mush. Badger dragged Derik up a steep incline and to the cabin where Derik was able to call 911 for help. Derik knows he’s alive today because of a dog he found in the bush!
It’s no wonder that Badger was inducted into Purina’s Animal Hall of Fame in 2015.
